Medical Malpractice and how a Medical Malpractice Lawyer can help

If an injury or a death is caused by a doctor or other health care professional who has not met the standards of care, then medical malpractice has occurred. There are many types of medical malpractice, including cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, birth injury, medical errors and misdiagnosis, wrongful death and catastrophic injury/trauma.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy is a term used to describe a group of chronic disorders impairing control of movement that appear in the first few years of life and generally do not worsen over time. The disorders are caused by faulty development of or damage to motor areas in the brain that disrupt the brain's ability to control movement and posture. Symptoms of cerebral palsy include difficulty with fine motor tasks, difficulty maintaining balance or walking, and involuntary movements.

What is Spinal Cord Injury?

Spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs when trauma results in damage to cells within the spinal cord or severs the nerve tracts that relay signals up and down the spinal cord. The most common types of SCI include contusion (bruising of the spinal cord) and compression (caused by pressure on the spinal cord). Other types of injuries include lacerations (severing or tearing of some nerve fibers) and central cord syndrome (specific damage to the corticospinal tracts of the cervical region of the spinal cord).

What is Birth Injury?

During the birth process, the baby may suffer a physical injury. Birth injuries can be related to pre-existing maternal health problems, fetal health problems, or doctor and/or medical staff negligence. The most devastating birth injuries are those that cause some type of brain damage or death.

What are Medical Errors and Misdiagnosis?

The final report of the President's Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Health Care Industry released in 1998 identified medical errors as one of the four major challenges facing the Nation in improving health care quality.

What is Wrongful Death and Catastrophic Injury/Trauma?

When a wrongful death has occurred in your family, you have responsibilities far beyond consideration of investigating the death and making a legal claim.

Dental Malpractice

Like doctors, dentists can be sued for malpractice. In the past, it was assumed that suits against dentists would result in such minor damages that they were not worthwhile. Recently, however, some suits against dentists for negligent treatment have resulted in large jury verdicts. As a result, more and more attorneys are willing to take on dental malpractice suits.

Failure to Diagnose Breast Cancer

The statistics are frightening. More than 10 percent of woman will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and it is the leading cause of death in women ages 40 to 60. However, the news on early diagnosis is encouraging. About 85 percent of women whose breast cancer is detected early will survive at least five years

Recovery for the Death of a Fetus

Whether or not a parent may maintain a cause of action against a negligent healthcare provider for the death of a fetus generally depends on the laws of the jurisdiction in which the medical care was given.

Dermatology Malpractice

Even physicians who practice dermatology may be liable for damages to a patient caused by their medical malpractice. Studies indicate that most malpractice claims result from the most common types of clinical situations, not the more exotic procedures.

Radiology Outsourcing

There is a serious shortage of radiologists in the United States. One trade journal recently reported there is an average of four vacancies per radiology department at American academic centers over the past two years.
